I really enjoyed this book - Terzani was an eminent Far East media correspondent for many years and has that fluency in his writing style。 The theme of this book however is something that he would not have covered in the many stories he filed down through his years; the role of fortune telling in Asian culture。 This started with a prediction from a fortune teller that he should not fly for a single year （1993） - Terzani decided to take this advice to heart and adopt a slower pace of travel all a I really enjoyed this book - Terzani was an eminent Far East media correspondent for many years and has that fluency in his writing style。 The theme of this book however is something that he would not have covered in the many stories he filed down through his years; the role of fortune telling in Asian culture。 This started with a prediction from a fortune teller that he should not fly for a single year （1993） - Terzani decided to take this advice to heart and adopt a slower pace of travel all around south-east Asia for that period。 What results is a book brimming with fascinating encounters with shamans， witches， chiromancers and soothsayers - some of whom are bordering on the criminal， but some of whom definitely have powers that border on the supernatural。The book opens a fascinating window onto an aspect of life that we rarely think about in Western society and is written with an obvious affection and deep understanding of the cultures of the region。 Terzani has a reporter's ability to get people to interact with him， including the then largest exporter of heroin from Burma's notorious 'Golden Triangle' （a surprisingly sympathetic character！） as well as sundry characters ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous。 The daily influence of what can loosely be called 'magic' in Asian culture is gently explored in a sympathetic way that leaves the reader saddened that such ancient belief systems are slowly being subsumed into our generic western identity that focuses almost solely on material matters。A gem of a book。 。。。more

Stupisce come un uomo di tale cultura abbia creduto per tutta la vita （per questo romanzo sicuramente） a maghi， guaritori e ciarlatani simili。 Evidentemente era affascinato da questi personaggi。 Però sa scrivere， ed il libro si finisce， anche se ci si chiede in continuazione “ma non aveva proprio niente di meglio da fare che perdere tempo con questi？”
